How to protect your computer from Ransomware

Always do security and software updates for windows and application programs on your system. Have your system set to automatically update.

Create backups of your data so you can restore your lost data.

Don’t open any suspicious looking emails with suspicious subject lines or from odd addresses.

  • Look carefully at the email address of the sender to see if it is coming from a legitimate address.
  • Don’t click on links. If you are in an email you can hover over hyperlinks without clicking on them to see where they would be directing you.
  • Keep in mind you should never be asked for personal information like bank account or social security numbers.

Install antivirus software.

Don’t click on pop-up windows on websites. Many of these companies advertise products that remove malware.

Should something happen, immediately disconnect your computer from the internet so it does not infect other machines. Report the crime to law enforcement and seek help from a trusted technology professional.
